Utsunomiya have kept quarrying Oya stones and nurtured a culture in which the stones are used in countless way as a local resource that are used locally. The site of an underground quarry has turned into a place where you can explore and 9,000 buildings made with Oya stone in the city are being converted into cafes, art galleries and other buildings.
Quarrying of Oya stone continues to this day as a local industry and the underground mazes are expanding.
