How far does this chilly space continue and go down? This huge space with high walls and pillars that are lined in order, the lights casting shadow one after another. Make a turn between the pillars and the same scenery spreads in front of your eyes, gradually making you disoriented.

Quarrying of Oya stone started in the Edo period, developing into Japan’s major quarrying industry and at peak shipped 890 thousand tons a year that produced this huge subterranean labyrinth.

In Utsunomiya, the production area of Oya stone, culture of “quarrying” stone and using the stone in various ways have been passed down generations attracting visitors to this place.
